Historically, most semiconductor companies were vertically integrated: they designed, fabricated, packaged and tested their semiconductors using internally developed software design tools, manufacturing processes and equipment.

Regarding consumer spending on high-tech gadgets, last Christmas was one of the worst holiday seasons in recent years, seriously affecting the semiconductor industry on the way. Although the final 2008 semiconductor sales had achieved almost the same level as 2007, sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 were one of the lowest in a long time. Needham & Company, a leading investment banking and asset management agency, predicts that in 2009 the consumer semiconductor market will decrease by 17% year-to-year, reaching only $6.2 billion in sales.
