למתבונן מהצד, נראה שעולם הסמיקונדקטור בנוי מקשה אחת – חבורה של אנשים אינטלגנטים, לאו דווקא אינטלגנטים רגשית, העוסקים בעמל יומם האפור מתחת לפלורסנטים, ואשר אותם מנהלים טיפוסים מעלי-פיהוק עוד יותר. בפועל, עולם הסמיקונדקטור עשיר בטיפוסי מנהלים צבעוניים וייחודיים. כל מנהל הוא ייחודי בדרכו אך בדרך כלל מדובר באנשים שהתקשורת שלהם לעולם החיצון היא דיי דומה, ומכאן קשה לדעת עד כמה הם שונים עד שלא נחשפים אליהם מספיק זמן.

2 weeks ago, we celebrated the official opening of the “Shimshit single track”; 12 Km of single track, very nicely done and suitable for intermediate level skills.

Historically, most semiconductor companies were vertically integrated: they designed, fabricated, packaged and tested their semiconductors using internally developed software design tools, manufacturing processes and equipment.

When I joined the semiconductor industry, more than 24 years ago (please don’t calculate my age) many acronyms and buzzwords in the semiconductor world did not exist or did not have any real meaning (e.g. COT, SOC, Foundry, IDM, Fab, Fabless, etc.). In the mid eighties, semiconductor companies had an R&D group (or more) and an in-house manufacturing division with silicon production capabilities.
At that time, companies such as Intel, Motorola, and Texas Instruments designed, manufactured, packaged, tested and delivered their own Integrated Circuits (ICs) to customers.

בשבוע שעבר, בלילה שבין יום רביעי לחמישי, חובבי יין ברחבי העולם התכנסו בחנויות וברי היין לחגוג את השקת יין הבוז'ולה 2009. רובכם מן הסתם מרימים גבה ותוהים מה המיוחד ביין זה שבכל העולם חוגגים את השקתו באותו זמן. ובכן קוראים יקרים מדובר כאן בגימיק שיווקי גאוני שהגו משווקי יין מחבל בורגונדי (Burgundy) בצרפת.

So here’s what I don’t quite understand, and am reaching out here for ideas, explanations, hints even for setting this dilemma straight for me.
Two equally rapidly growing trends, in seemingly directly opposing directions, are becoming more and more evident in recent years. The one is to do with the way we’re using technology daily in more mobile and, more to my point, more public spaces.

בפוסט הזה אנסה לעמוד על טיבו של המושג "להיות אדם מקושר" בתעשיית הסמיקונדקטור בפרט, ובכלל בהייטק.
אין זה סוד כי יש לחלקנו את אותה יכולת חמקמקה להתחבר עם אנשים אחרים. אני לא מדבר על חיבור שנוצר מיחסי עבודה ארוכי שנים, אלא דווקא מיכולת הנטוורקינג (לא מצאתי מילה מקבילה בעברית, "רישות" אולי?).
בימים טרום היות הגוגל האוראקל המודרני, יצא לי להיות אחראי גם על קבוצת IT קטנה. את הקבוצה הוביל סיסטם אדמינסטרטור מסויים, ותפקידו העיקרי היה לגרום למערכת עובדת, תומכת תכנון, תוך ביצוע שדרוגים לא כואבים. תפקיד לא קל בעליל.

Regarding consumer spending on high-tech gadgets, last Christmas was one of the worst holiday seasons in recent years, seriously affecting the semiconductor industry on the way. Although the final 2008 semiconductor sales had achieved almost the same level as 2007, sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 were one of the lowest in a long time. Needham & Company, a leading investment banking and asset management agency, predicts that in 2009 the consumer semiconductor market will decrease by 17% year-to-year, reaching only $6.2 billion in sales.

ודאי חשבתם לפעמים מה המיוחד בנוזל המיוחד הזה הנקרא יין? מדוע בכתבי עת הקשורים בטכנולוגיה עילית (הייטק) יש מדור יין?
מדוע אין למשל מדורים הקשורים אופנה או בולאות או תחביבים שונים אחרים?
